World’s most expensive dog

Fluffy... big... adorable... and expensive!

We all know the quote which says “money can’t buy love”, but with $1.5 million (€1.43 million) you can buy your four legged Tibetan Mastiff best friend! His name is Big Splash and he has a new master, a multi-millionaire coal baron from China.

The high price paid for the dog is a sign that the red Tibetan Mastiff has become a status symbol in China, replacing jewellery and cars as a way for the super-rich to show off their wealth. Not only is red considered a lucky colour, but these dogs are thought to be holy animals, blessing their owners' health and security.

Let’s learn more about Tibetan Mastiffs…
This still primitive dog breed was developed centuries ago in Tibet. According to archaeological records, remains of massive dogs dating back to 1100 B.C. were found in China. These dogs may have moved with Genghis Khan and Attila the Hun, thereby providing original stock for the Tibetan Mastiff in Central Asia. Originally they used as guard dogs for livestock and property, but they also enjoy life as a family companion and show dog.

The Tibetan Mastiff is loving, gentle, patient, and understanding. His centuries of working closely with humans have made him very sophisticated in the ways he understands people. He's a hard worker, protective of his family, fearless, and loyal. His large size and substance makes him a wonderful guard dog, and centuries of breeding for that specific task have perfected him as a protector.

Some breeders have labeled the Tibetan Mastiff into two types, although both types are often born in the same litter: the Do-khyi and the Tsang-khyi. Tsang-khyi means "dog from Tsang" and is described as the "monastery" type. Both types can live comfortably in warm, dry climates, and in cold temperatures, which they love. Marco Polo described the Tibetan Mastiff as “tall as a donkey with a voice as powerful as that of a lion”.

With his noble appearance, wooly coat, which they blow it once in the springtime, appealing colors, and beautiful tail, the Tibetan Mastiff is sure to be a conversation starter and traffic stopper as you walk him down the street.
Is this a lion? Is this a bear? No... it's just a dog!
